A Problem In The SBC That No One is Talking About
The Southern Baptist Convention has been under both controversy and investigation in recent years. But there's one thing that no one has talked about that could be the common denominator in all of it.
There's been plenty of talk about how Russell Moore tried to falsely accuse several people of covering up sexual abuse. Including Mike Stone, a man I have known for years and have a ton of respect for. I was a member of Mike Stone's church from 2010 to 2018, and I learned so much during my time there. It was there that I started to take my faith seriously, as well as learning the importance of having a Biblical worldview. The false claims that Russell Moore made about Mike Stone made me examine whether or not I even wanted to remain in the SBC at all. The church I was attending at the time these false accusations occurred mostly took a moderate approach to this, and I ultimately started attending another church in 2024 when I knew for sure that this was the direction they were going to go.
There's also been plenty of talk about the role of women in the church. Scripture says that the role of pastor is for men. 1 Timothy 2:12 says "But I do not allow a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet." This doesn't mean that women have no place in the church, but rather it means that God intended for men to be the spiritual leaders. There are many who have been pushing for liberal ideologies such as women pastors, most notably Rick Warren. Those who have also been in favor of a more liberal approach to these things include former SBC presidents JD Greear and Ed Litton, as well as people like Steven Furtick who have done so in a way that most people don't notice.
But there's one thing that I haven't heard anyone talk about that could explain why all of these things happened at the moment they did. The things that Russell Moore, Rick Warren, and others did were in 2021. That's the same year that Kamala Harris became the first female vice president of the United States. You might be wondering what that would have to do with this, but what I'm about to tell you could be the common denominator in the timing and motive in all of these things.
Kamala Harris claims to be a Baptist. Thunk about it, the same year that a "female baptist" became vice president, many Baptists tried to force liberal logic into the SBC, from women pastors to the accusations of sexual abuse cover up. This can't be a coincidence. This isn't the first time the SBC has done this when someone who claims to be a Baptist is in a leadership position in the United States. In the late 1970s when Jimmy Carter, who also was a Baptist, was president of the United States, the SBC also started going down a liberal direction. Anytime a liberal Baptist is in a leadership position in the United States, Baptists become more liberal. You can't make this stuff up.
Does this mean that Baptists are being led astray by a wolf in sheep's clothing? Or is this an example of Baptists showing their true colors? There are several people who know more about the in and outs of the SBC than I do, but I am writing this because I believe that many Baptists are easily deceived by people who intend on causing unnecessary division and trying to be more like the world rather than going into the world to make disciples.
